She always covered herself in lies
Tracing 'unworthy' on her arms
And 'never hungry or good enough' on her belly
Her masks were always artfully applied
And her made-up happiness as perfect as her make-up

We always ignored her reality
Typing 'clichéd' as a perfect label
And 'pretender' as an explanation for inattention
We hid behind self-satisfaction
And laughter as artificial as our acrylic nails

He always stood off to the side
Tracing 'unworthy' on acts of praise
And 'for your glory and praise alone' on sunrises
He never said a word to her
And his shimmering silent life changed her forever
